Argentina captain and world cup winner Lionel Messi has agreed to extend his contract and remain at PSG until 2024. 35-year-old Messi who has led Argentina to World Cup victory is out of contract at the French club next summer, but it is being reported that a new deal has been agreed upon, according to respected journalist Guillem Balague.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has recently spoken fondly about Messi’s time at the club, and how he would love Messi to make an emotional return to the Spanish giants, where he spent 21 years before making the move to France.
Messi is expected to sign a one-year deal with the option of another year. The agreement has been finalised after months of talks and negotiation between PSG’s director of football Luis Campos and Messi’s father Jorge. A meeting is also reported to have been held in Doha with PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
“It is practically all agreed with PSG,” says European football expert Balague. Barcelona has not approached him or his dad to offer anything. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was awarded the Golden ball for the player of the tournament at the World Cup, as Argentina won the title for the third time with a penalty shoot-out victory over France.
After he left the Camp Nou club, Messi put pen to paper on a two-year contract as a free agent, with the option of a third year, in 2021. In that time, he has made 53 appearances for the Ligue 1 side so far, scoring 23 goals in all competitions. With the victory recorded in Qatar, the Argentine has now won one World Cup, four Champions League titles, one Copa America, 10 La Liga trophies with Barcelona and a Ligue 1 crown in France with PSG to make up a glittering trophy cabinet.
