The FA announced in a statement on Sunday that England coach Gareth Southgate will continue in his role and lead the three lions to the European championships in 2024.
The 52-year-old had said after his country’s quarterfinal elimination from the world cup in the hands of defending champions, France that he is “conflicted” on whether to continue as England manager. Reports have it that after consultations with his family and friends he has made the decision to stay on and complete his contract which ends after Euro 2024.
Southgate was appointed England Manager after Euro 2016 and he has steadied the ship for them with improved performances over the past 6 years, by guiding them to a world cup semi-final in Russia in 2018, and then to a place in the final of the delayed Euro 2020 last summer which they lost on penalties to Italy, before taking England to Qatar in which they were knocked out by France in the quarterfinal. After that defeat, Southgate was said to be rethinking his position, as he was not sure whether he was the right man for the job.
It was reported that Southgate was worried about how he was viewed by fans after England was thrashed 4-0 at home by Hungary in the Nations League in June, and then lost away from home to Italy in September.

However, the FA and players expressed their support for him, by wanting him to stay on. England begins their Euro 2024 qualification journey with an away match to Italy before hosting Ukraine at home.
