Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has announced that the second season would be a “natural continuation of the first season.” In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Korean filmmaker explained that, contrary to fans’ assumptions, the sequel would be a natural progression from where the tale ended in season one.
Dong-hyuk also revealed more information about the series’ protagonist, Gi-hun. Below is an extract from the interview: I’ve noticed many responses to the show (Squid Game), but I don’t want to make season two in response to those remarks.

The Netflix original South Korean survival drama series Squid Game was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-Joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-us, Heo SQung-Tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-young star in it.

However, Hwang got the concept from his early economic problems and South Korea’s class imbalance and capitalism. Though he authored it in 2009, he could not find a production firm to fund it until Netflix expressed interest in it around 2019 as part of their push to increase their foreign programming offerings.

The second season of the show was ordered in June 2022, with a late 2023 or early 2024 premiere date. Netflix is also working on a reality competition show based on Squid Game, with 456 contestants fighting for a huge cash prize.
