More about the Squid Game

The Netflix original South Korean survival drama series Squid Game was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-Joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-us, Heo SQung-Tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-young star in it.

The series centres on a tournament in which 456 players, all of whom are in severe financial need, risk their lives to play a series of lethal children’s games for the chance to win a reward of 45.6 billion (US$35 million, €33 million, or £29 million as of a broadcast). The name of the series is taken from a children’s game popular in Korea.

However, Hwang got the concept from his early economic problems and South Korea’s class imbalance and capitalism. Though he authored it in 2009, he could not find a production firm to fund it until Netflix expressed interest in it around 2019 as part of their push to increase their foreign programming offerings.
