Protest against new Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe

Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected Sri Lanka President according to BBC news this morning. Ranil Wickremesinghe was a prime minister before the Sri Lankan MPs elect him as the new president of the country amidst his shaded personality with the public.

After so many months of mass protest, he was faced with the responsibility of restoring public order and leading the country out of its economic downturn. Ranil Wickremesinghe ultimately defeated his rival Dullas Alahapperuma with a total of 134 votes – 82 votes at the parliament.

The protests actions against the newly elected Sri Lanka President

Gotabaya Rajapaksa the ex-Sri Lanka President fled from the country last week due to the massive protest. Upon his run to the Maldives, the protesters stormed his presidential residences and all other government-owned buildings. He had to take to his heels from there to Singapore. The protests were about a call for resignation.

Before the appointment of Wickremesinghe as the president, the protesters have also called him for resignation. Wickremesinghe was appointed minister in May. In a demonstration against his leadership, the protesters burnt down his home and also stormed his office in Colombo. The protesters are now left with a hard choice to make. The current situation in Sri Lanka has caused shortages of fuel, food and other basic amenities. After the election of the new Sri Lanka President, he commented to the parliament that the country is in a difficult situation.

Wickremesinghe seeks support after being asked to step down

The Sri Lanka President aims to restore political stability so that they can continue the deal between the country and the International Monetary Fund. The deal/negotiations were all about a bailout package. Ranil Wickremesinghe is 73 years of age at the point of election and has called on his political opponent to work with his administration for the betterment of the country. The newly elected president has been in the politics of his country for 45 years. He’s been elected a prime minister 6 times and he has run for the presidency two times in the previous year.

The ruling party gave out their word to the new president. They said they give him all the support he needs to run his term effectively. The support given to him was a result of the economic credentials he had. The protesters were seen calling for the president to step down from the position. The demonstrators viewed him as part of the politicians who have mishandled the finance of the country.

After Mr Rajapaksa fled from office, Wickremesinghe assumed the position of acting Sri Lanka President. Mr Wickremesinghe did not heed the call to step down from the protesters. In the light of his actions, he will remain the president until November 2024
