Pope Benedict: Before his death

Pope Benedict was born in Marktl am Inn, Germany, in 1927 and was ordained as a priest in 1951. He later served as a professor of theology at various universities in Germany before being appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising in 1977. In 1981, Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal.

Pope Benedict: Condolences

Many people around the world have paid tribute to Pope Benedict following his death.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement, “We express our heartfelt condolences to the faithful of the Diocese of Rome and to all the people of the Church. We pray for the eternal rest of the soul of the Holy Father and for the consolation of his loved ones.”

Pope Francis also released a statement, saying, “I express my condolences to the whole Church and all people of good will on the death of Pope Benedict XVI.
