Incumbent governor of Rivers state and one of the strong contenders of the PDP Presidential primaries, Nyesom Wike, has slammed a lawsuit against the People’s Democratic Party flagbearer in the 2023 elections Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Wike, in conjunction with another member of the PDP, Mr Michael Ekamon, filed a suit in the Federal High Court, Abuja. The PDP, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were also slammed with different charges in that lawsuit by Mr Wike.

The lawsuit could draw the party’s preparation for the forthcoming elections backwards, seeing that the party is already bedevilled with the defection and upswing of Peter Obi, who is already pulling weight in the Labour party.
A few days ago, a committee was set up by the PDP to look into the messy relationship between Atiku and Wike. They developed this brawl between themselves, over the outcome of the party’s primaries, and the choice of Atiku, as the party’s flagbearer. The enmity between the duo skyrocketed last week when the Rivers state governor charged Atiku with lying about the state of the party’s crisis. He also called Sule Lamido and others “Party dogs”, claiming that they were agents of Atiku, with the sole purpose of creating fights in the party.
Mr Wike has been furious over the outcome of the party’s primaries for weeks and became even more infuriated when Atiku Abubakar chose the Delta state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as the Vice presidential candidate slot, over him. Mr Abubakar, the PDP Presidential candidate, however, stated that his grounds for picking Okowa, as his running mate was due to important reasons bordering around loyalty and Competence.
Mr Abubakar scored a total of 371 votes to win the party’s primaries, with Mr Wike coming second with a total of 237 out of the 767 votes casted at the convention ground, in Abuja. Nyesom Wike also held Mr Tambuwal’s decision to step down for Atiku in the 90th minute of the contest, responsible for his loss at the primaries. The act by Tambuwal he noted to be unfair, and against the rules of the party.
The Rivers state governor has since excluded himself from activities of the party since the devastating loss, which could be vividly noticed in his absence in the Osun state governorship elections Campaign. There have also been rumours of him defecting to the APC, as many of the party Chieftains have been seen visiting him recently.
