Eriksen and Rashford both score as Man United advance to the quarter finals of EFL cup

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen were both on the scoresheet as Manchester United beat Burnley at Old Trafford to advance to the Quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.

The match saw the return of players that featured for their countries at the World Cup. Including goalscorers Christian Eriksen, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Casemiro who started the cup tie, as well as Antony who came on in the second half for Erik ten Hag’s side who made a perfect return to hostilities.

Eriksen put United in front in the 27th minute from very close range, tapping into the top of the net after Aaron Wan-Bissaka showed great athleticism to deliver a brilliant assist. Just before the hour-mark, Rashford doubled the host’s advantage with a solo run and a superb finish after picking up the ball from midfield, beating multiple defenders before slotting it coolly past Bailey Peacock-Farrell at his far post.

Championship leaders, Burnley whose former Man city captain-coach, Vincent Kompany had a couple of quality chances to find their way back into the game, but wasted both as United advanced to join fellow Premier League sides Leicester City, Wolves, Newcastle United, Southampton and Nottingham Forest and in the quarterfinals, while League One Charlton Athletic beat Brighton on penalties to qualify as the only team outside England’s top-flight. The winner of Thursday’s match between Liverpool and Manchester City completes the set, ahead of the quarter-final draw later that day.
