Sam Kerr’s stunning goal and a brace by forward Lauren James were enough to ensure that the Blues beat PSG in front of 10,129 fans at Stamford Bridge and go on to top their Women’s Champions League group. Chelsea finished 2022 unbeaten in 18 home games and they will have to wait till February 10 to discover their quarter-final opponents when the draw is made.

PSG who already booked their place in the next round started as the better team, as they went in search of a two-goal margin win needed to top their group, and upset the record-setting crowd who made history as the second-highest home attendance of an English club in the Women’s Champions League.

Kadidiatou Diani’s brilliant early attempt almost put the french league leaders in front, forcing goalkeeper Zecira Musovic to tip the 40-meter shot onto the bar, but PSG’s attacking momentum was cut short two minutes before halftime when Sam Kerr opened the scoring with a ferocious strike that flew past the opposition goalkeeper, Sarah Bouhaddi.

Chelsea wasted no time in doubling their lead in the second half, as Lauren James started and finished a move by profiting from a loose ball inside the PSG penalty area and providing the final touch following a fluid interchange of passes between Fran Kirby and Kerr.

Kirby assisted James’ second seven minutes later, after receiving a superb pass from Guro Reiten. They could have added a fourth when a brilliant attempt by Fran Kirby struck the post but 3-0 is how it ended with the blues securing their place in the quarterfinals convincingly.
