Reports reaching the news station were that lots of Sri Lankans were held captive before the recapture of the izyum city by Ukraine. Under the Russian occupation, a lot of atrocities were reported.

The story

Nevertheless, the story of this capture begins when the group had just set out from their homes. As they were going, at the first checkpoint, they were taken captive by the Russian soldiers. It was reported that their hands were tied as they were conveyed to a machine tool factory which was in the town of Vovchansk which is near the Russian border.

The group was kept in the bond for 4 months as a prisoner making them do hard labour and they were even tortured. The people captured only come to Ukraine to study but instead of the good life, they have planned for themselves. They were forced to accept the hardship as they become prisoners that lives on little food at izyum Ukraine.

Their liberty was restricted to an extent that they were only allowed to use the bathroom once a day for 2 minutes which may not be enough to do a major waste pass out. A woman was spotted among the group and was kept separately while the other people (men) were hidden in a single room.

The story narrator Paththinajakan said they locked us in a room and use it to beat us when we are bathing. She said they didn’t allow her to meet the others for three months before the city was saved. Mary on the other hand was a victim of a car bomb in Sri Lanka. Mary’s face was filled with scars because of this and also she had a heart condition but because of the situation, no medical care was administered. Paththinajakan said she was so tense when alone. She was given tablets as the people who took her captive said she has a mental issue.

A man reported that his toenails were torn off with pliers. Been hard to believe, he removed his shoes to show off the injured legs. Also, another man from the group suffered a lot of torture.

The story continues as the people taken captive said they were beaten for no reason. This is a result of one of the Russian soldiers getting drunk. Thinesh Gogenthiran a 35-year-old said they hit me across the body so many times with the guns they are holding. The victim continued that one of them punched his stomach and the victim remains in pain for two days.

Dilukshan Robertclive a 25-year-old said they cried every day as they are unhappy and at the same time very angry. The victim said they held unto family memories and a lot of prayers.

Russians denial

This reported story is seen as an allegation against the Russians as they have declaimed targeting civilians or committing any war crimes. Since they have declaimed, the Sri Lankans’ allegation becomes more intense as other atrocities were reported. Bodies which was taken out of the city of Izyum from the burial forest shows numerous sign of torture. More than ten torture chambers have been found by the Ukrainian President in the Kharkiv areas.

Sri Lankans freedom

After so many months of domination, Sri Lanka sets out for freedom. After lots of plans by the Ukrainian military, they set out to retake eastern Ukraine. This happened at the start of this month. The group which reported the story were seen walking toward Kharkiv, without a means to contact their families. Police officers who saw them gave them their phones.

Since it was a long period since they had contact with their family, Ainkaranathan Ganesamoorthi a 40-year-old man sighted his wife and burst into immense tears. More cries engulf as the others reach out to their families. In a lot of in-depth joy, the group hug the police officer who came to their aid. The group wasn’t left alone but they were taken to Kharkiv to receive medical attention and were offered new clothes + a place to sleep even though it’s a rehabilitation centre.
