Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has removed Phil Jones and four other players from the team’s first-team dressing room to make room for new additions. Despite a delayed start to the transfer market for United, Erik Ten Hag received substantial funding to revamp a team that finished last season with the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish.

For a combined total of about £220 million, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Antony, and Martin Dubravka all moved to Old Trafford over the summer. This is the most money Manchester United has ever spent in a single transfer window.

The first-team changing room at the AON Training Centre can only fit a maximum of 24 players, thus the club was compelled to move some periphery players into the U23 changing area, according to The Sun.
The most notable player to have been let go by Erik Ten Hag to make place for the team’s new additions is Jones, an England international who despite having his career destroyed by injuries is still in Old Trafford.

Brandon Williams, who spent last year on loan at Norwich City, is also being sacrificed. Axel Tuanzebe and Tegen Mendi, two defenders, were also transferred, along with young midfielder Shola Shoretire.

The latest setback for Jones, who was anticipated to depart this summer, is Eric Ten Hag’s choice. Williams and Tuanzebe were also eligible for transfers during the window, but Erik Ten Hag was apprehensive to part with the group due to injuries, thwarting their hopes of finding new teams.

After suffering from injuries over the previous four years, Jones has only played in a few senior games. In the 1-0 loss to Wolves in January, his last game for United, he made his first appearance in two years.

Given how well Malacia has adjusted to life at Old Trafford, Williams is unlikely to receive a reprieve any time soon, and Tuanzebe and Jones have fallen even further down the pecking order since Martinez’s arrival. Martinez and Raphael Varane have developed an instant rapport.

Malacia and Martinez have already taken the place of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire in Ten Hag’s starting lineup. It’s expected that Eriksen will continue to play in the midfield. Big-money Brazilian players Casemiro and Antony, who together paid Ajax £85 million, are yet to make their club debut starts.
