According to a recent study by The Athletic, which polled over 100 players—past and present—about a variety of concerns affecting the professional game. Two of them centred on the ongoing conflict between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

64 per cent of the players chose Ronaldo above Messi as their choice for the player with the better career response to the question.

The Portuguese great has four Premier League championships, two La Liga championships, two Serie A championships, and five Champions League championships, and also helped his nation win Euro 2016. While at Barcelona, Messi won four Champions Leagues and ten La Liga championships. After moving to Paris Saint-Germain, he won the Ligue 1 championship and led Argentina to Copa America in 2021.

Curiously, however, a resounding 73% stated they would like to play alongside Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo. That may be a sign that Ronaldo’s performance has dipped a bit over the previous two seasons, leaving him fighting for a spot at United, and it also suggests that Messi’s ability to produce is perceived as more team-friendly than Ronaldo’s more goal-centric character.

Dani Alves, a longtime teammate of Messi’s at Barcelona, recently shared his opinions on the topic. Unexpectedly, the Brazilian praised Ronaldo but argued that Messi is on “another level” because of his talent.

Alves said in a podcast that he cherishes Cristiano and he can speak now that they aren’t at Barça and Madrid, even if it always seemed like he couldn’t. He also said that Cristiano serves as an example of how you can compete with the best by working hard.

According to Alves, he had the chance to tell Ronaldo how much he respected him. He continued to say that how can he not admire a man who earned everything? and he could relate to Ronaldo because that is the foundation of all he has done in his life.
