Chelsea has joined the shocking list of clubs interested in pricing Harry Maguire from Manchester United, and are prepared to use United’s recent interest in Christian Pulisic as leverage to pull the swap deal off.
Harry Maguire to Chelsea as an alternative?
Yesterday, Chelsea enquired about the availability of Manchester United’s captain, Harry Maguire, for a shock move to West London. Chelsea has looking for replacements for the defensive duo, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, but has only succeeded in signing Kalidou Koulibaly. They have been on the trail of Wesley Fofana, but Leicester’s valuation and unwillingness to sell have made the deal difficult to complete.
Chelsea will still try for Fofana, as there are reports that he would miss out on Leicester’s clash against Southampton, although they’re on the lookout for alternatives.
- Mikel Arteta is sure that Bukayo Saka will sign a new contract, which dashes hopes for more signings
- Elon Musk says, “Also, I’m buying Manchester United”, but who will buy Manchester United from the Glazers?
So as an alternative, they are looking in the direction of Harry Maguire, who has been under fire at United for over two seasons because of his somewhat woeful performances and mistakes. Harry Maguire started his Manchester United career on a good note under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but after missing United’s Europa League final against Villareal, he hasn’t been at his best.
He was one of their worst players last season, making a lot of mistakes that led to goals, scoring some own goals himself, and even injuring his player. According to ManUtdNews, Erik ten Hag is even considering dropping him from the starting lineup for their game against Liverpool on Monday.
Having started the new season badly, ten Hag will be looking to make some changes to ensure that they grind out results against Liverpool. And with Raphael Varane pushing for a starting place, Maguire could lose his place in the starting lineup and the team — a situation that Maguire wouldn’t like, especially with the FIFA World Cup coming up in November.
Pulisic could be a sweetener in the deal
Since Chelsea put up Christian Pulisic on their loan/sale list, a lot of clubs have come up to secure his signature. One such club is Manchester United. United have been in search of a versatile right winger and has scouted out Cody Gakpo, Christian Pulisic, and most recently Yannick Carrasco. Chelsea could capitalize on Manchester United’s interest in the US international, Christian Pulisic, to prise Maguire from the Red Devils. The Blues were formerly interested in a loan move for Pulisic, but with Maguire on the line, they could settle for a swap deal.
Getting Pulisic could also be a win for United, as it would mean further competition on the flanks. It would also allow Rashford to focus more on a striking role, deputizing for Martial, so that United can let Cristiano Ronaldo leave. Pulisic, himself, isn’t a bad player, but his stint at Chelsea has been marred by injuries. Manchester United may also decide to retain their captain, fend off Chelsea’s interest as they did with Barça, and get Pulisic on loan, although Chelsea might not allow that.
Let’s see how it goes in the last week of this summer transfer window.
