Chelsea set to hijack Marc Cucurella in a player-plus-cash deal

Brighton’s Player Of The Season for the 2021/2022 season, Marc Cucurella has reportedly been locked in on Chelsea’s transfer radar, as the Blues are set to meet Brighton’s valuation and hijack the deal from Pep Guardiola’s grasp. This is coming 24 hours after reports confirmed Chelsea’s interest in Inter Milan right-back, Denzel Dumfries.

Man City’s apparent need for Marc Cucurella

As reported by football journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea is in talks to sign Spanish and Brighton and Hove Albion FC left-back, Marc Cucurella and are eager to meet Brighton’s £50 million for the player. Marc Cucurella, 24, had handed in a transfer request to Brighton on Friday to push for a transfer to his first suitors, Manchester City after their first bid of £30 million was turned down.

Manchester City has already offloaded their utility left-back Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko, and won’t want Joao Cancelo as a right-footed left-back in the coming season, so they are looking for a replacement, with Cucurella earmarked on Guardiola’s transfer shortlist. Although, with Cucurella’s valuation, City could look towards cheaper options like Borussia Dortmund’s Portuguese left-back Raphael Guerreiro.

Brighton, on their part, is unwilling to sell one of their best legs, who has 4 years left after signing in from Getafe for £15 million last summer. Cucurella enjoyed a wonderful first season in England last season, playing 36 matches, scoring 1, and assisting 2. Following the stellar performance, Chelsea has grown interested in his services with the uncertainty lingering over the futures of the Spanish duo, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta, following interest from Barcelona — with Barça’s president confirming the injection of €100 million in revenue gained from asset sales.

Chelsea’s other left-back option, Ben Chilwell, has had his Chelsea career hampered by injuries, playing just 14 times last season, with 4 goal contributions. Having strengthened the middle of the defence with the £33 million signing of Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly, they’ll be looking to do justice to other areas of the pitch as well.

Chelsea’s advantage in the deal

In other reports, there are suggestions that Chelsea is looking to add talented 19-year-old centre-back, Levi Colwill to sweeten the deal for Brighton. There have been reports of Brighton being in talks to sign the player valued at £20 million, and Chelsea would now look to capitalize on their interest in the Cobham Academy graduate to ensure they secure the services of Marc Cucurella.

With everything moving in Chelsea’s favour, the Blues of London could very well be Marc Cucurella’s new destination.
