Chelsea could make former Arsenal striker, Aubameyang their 6th summer signing and their new number 9

Aubameyang

Chelsea is in search of a striker, and Aubameyang seems to be the man that fits their description. After losing Lukaku on loan to Inter Milan last month, and with the growing interest from clubs in Timo Werner, it was certain they would need to sign a proven striker this transfer window. And while they have lost out to Barcelona with Lewandowski, they are looking to take advantage of Aubameyang’s situation at Barça with Lewa’s arrival.

Barcelona need to sell if they must register the new boys

FC Barcelona is on a stringent player schedule, and while they have made some great additions with the signings of Franck Kessie, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, etc., it is crucial that they also sell some players so that they can register the new additions for the new La Liga season. Another issue with the addition of the new players would be the assurance of game time, and that is the situation with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Robert Lewandowski’s arrival at Catalonia spelt lesser game time for the former Gabonese captain, Aubameyang. It meant that Aubameyang had to fight for a spot as a striker in Xavi Hernandez’s team along with Robert Lewandowski and Memphis Depay or struggle for a spot as a right winger with Ferran Torres and injury-prone Ansu Fati. Although this would be undeserving for a player of his calibre, it is the situation at hand. Xavi is keen on keeping him at the club, but the board thinks otherwise.

Tuchel could be vital to the success of Chelsea’s bid for Aubameyang

Barcelona needs to sell players to register the ones they’ve bought, and Chelsea needs a good striker if they are to compete for trophies at the highest level this season. To this end, Chelsea has reportedly enquired about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. An important variable in the deal would be Thomas Tuchel’s relationship with Aubameyang, as Tuchel coached Auba while they were at Dortmund in Germany. And since the takeover of Chelsea by Todd Boehly and his consortium, Tuchel has been afforded an increased measure of influence in Chelsea’s transfer dealings. This means that Tuchel could be Chelsea’s driving force for this Aubameyang deal.

Another thing to note would be Chelsea’s long-term interest in the man—Chelsea was said to be monitoring his situation at Arsenal in 2020 when Lampard was the Chelsea manager before Auba signed a new contract. Although it is unclear how or if Chelsea would pull through with the deal, what is clear is that Barça needs to offload some players if they would register players in the new campaign on August 13.

Chelsea is also eyeing other options

In other news, Chelsea is also reportedly eyeing a move for Manchester United target Benjamin Sesko. The 19-year-old impressed a lot last season and has attracted a lot of clubs after his performance against Liverpool in their pre-season friendly. So, although Manchester United are the front-runner in the deal, Chelsea is prepared to swoop in and hijack the deal when they see an opening. As long as Chelsea continues their search for a striker, Benjamin Sesko is a name that will be on their radar for the time being.
