Chelsea suffer setback in bid to sign Ac Milan midfielder Bennacer

Chelsea has suffered a setback in their pursuit of Algeria international midfielder and Ac Milan captain Ismael Bennacer. This is according to the Italian media outfit, Gazetta Dello Sport.

The Algeria international, whose contract expires at the end of the current season, has been one of the players being closely monitored by Chelsea, and it is reported that he has been tracked for quite some time.

As it currently stands, he is allowed to negotiate a move with a foreign club including the blues for a pre-contract agreement next month.

But the latest reports have it that he is on the verge of a contract extension with Milan, with his agent Enzo Raiola aiming to increase his wages at the Italian side. Bennacer formerly played for Arsenal when he arrived in north London as a youngster back in 2015. He did not stay for long as he left the Gunners for Italian side Empoli in 2017, before joining Milan two years later, in 2019.

The 25-year-old Algerian is primarily a defensive midfielder, but he can also operate as a central midfielder. Having played at the position for both club and for Algeria for which he was a breakout star at the 2019 AFCON. He has also played in the attacking midfielder role in his career as well, but it is in Central defensive midfield that he has enjoyed the most success and that is where he will likely be deployed if he joins Chelsea.
