Chelsea had previously announced the signings of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and MLS goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina; now Carney Chukwuemeka is the next in line to be confirmed by the Blues after a very topsy-turvy last few weeks. Chelsea had been lining up moves for midfielders, as Kante and Jorginho’s deal would be drawing to a close next year, and they are uncertain of their renewal. They have reportedly set their sights on Manchester United target Frenkie De Jong and now have announced the confirmation of Carney Chukwuemeka’s deal.

Carney Chukwuemeka is a young talent

Chukwuemeka is an all-rounded midfielder with great ball control and an eye for probing passes. He starred for England at the U19 Euros earlier this year, playing in all their games up to the final in which he scored, and they won 3-1 against Israel to lift the trophy. Chukwuemeka was named Aston Villa’s Academy Player of the Season for the 2020/21 season after he helped them win the FA Youth Cup that year while becoming the tournament’s highest goalscorer. He made 14 appearances for Villa last season and became the youngest player to make a goal contribution in the Premier League, with his assist against Norwich in a 2-0 win.

Signing for Chelsea

After the U19 Euros, Sky Sports reported that Carney Chukwuemeka was not interested in signing a deal with Aston Villa, having entered the last six months of his contract. He had spent six years at the club, having joined at the age of 12. And with the rapid improvement and success he recorded during his time there, he had a lot of suitors. It was even thought that he would be heading to Borussia Dortmund at a point in the negotiations. There were also talks of Barcelona, but ultimately, Chelsea completed the deal.

Chelsea chairman, Todd Boehly lauded the young man’s talents, saying that he “is one of the most exciting young players in Europe”, and that Chelsea is delighted to have succeeded in adding such young talent to the team for the new season and the future. And on joining Chelsea, Chukwuemeka confirmed that it was a deal that he wanted to happen, as he “couldn’t get Chelsea out of his head”.
Carney Chukwuemeka is certainly at Chelsea and to win trophies, and we hope he continues his brilliant career at the club.
