On Sunday, there were rumours making ground that Manchester United was in talks with various parties for a potential move for former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane. But now Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has downplayed the rumours, stating that there is no truth in the story.

Manchester United need a left-footed winger

Although Manchester United have many options like Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Elanga, Alejandro Garnacho, and other academy graduates in the wide positions, the bulk of those players are right-footed and would most likely perform better on the right wing. Modern football styles now call for wingers playing in the positions opposite to their preferred foot, and this is a notion Erik ten Hag is very much in support of. So even if Jadon Sancho has impressed in pre-season, Ten Hag still believes that the team need a left-footed attacker.

As a result, the club has been in the market for a left-footed winger in the person of Ajax’s Brazilian, Antony. But with Ajax having already sold up to 4 first-team players over the course of this transfer window, they are unwilling to let another one go. As such increased, the evaluation of Antony to €100 million, a sum Manchester United is not ready to pay for the player. To remedy the situation, United have resorted to cheaper options and has stumbled upon Leroy Sane, according to the Mirror.

Hasan Salihamidzic insists Leroy Sane isn’t leaving the Bavarians

Leroy Sane came into the limelight at Manchester City before signing for Bayern Munich in 2020. Since then, he has scored 25 times in 91 games for Bayern Munich and helped them win six trophies over those two years. But despite Lewandowski’s departure, the arrival of Sadio Mane still means that Leroy Sane would not get game time at the Allianz Arena. Bayern has many attacking options like Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Choupo-Moting, Thomas Muller, and the new additions Sadio Mane and Mathys Tel. This means that Sane would have to struggle for first-team football with all these stars, as well as Bayern’s young talent Zirkzee.

The World Cup kicks off in November, and Leroy Sane would be looking to feature for Germany on that stage — a dream that wouldn’t be possible if he can’t play regularly. But amidst all these, Bayern’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has insisted that Leroy Sane is an essential player for Bayern Munich and won’t leave them. In an interview with Sky Sports, he was quoted thus,

There’s no truth to that. He’s an important player for us. There [is] nothing to say about that at all.

So based on the reports, Sane won’t be leaving Bayern, but if Manchester United come knocking, he could go for better game time and opportunities.
