Argentina declare public holiday to celebrate World Cup triumph

The Argentine national team will arrive in Buenos Aires on Tuesday morning to celebrate their world cup victory at the Obelisk; the monument which is the traditional arena for sporting celebrations in the city. This was announced by the Argentina football federation on Monday. In addition, the Argentine government has made Tuesday so that, in their words, the entire country can “express their deepest joy for the national team” 

Argentina who beat France on Sunday is expected to arrive with their contingent in the early hours of Tuesday aboard a national airline and spend the night at the federation’s training centre located near the airport, before hitting the streets later in the day, according to local media reports. The Argentine Football Federation posted on its Twitter account that the squad will leave the hotel at noon and head to the obelisk to celebrate with fans. 

Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 extra-time draw which has been labelled by men as the best final in the history of the world cup. This is a third world cup win for them, and the first in 36 years, after the late Diego Maradona inspired them to victory in Mexico. 

At the blast of the final whistle, Argentines and football fans around the world took to the streets and social media in jubilation to celebrate the win, and are eagerly awaiting the team’s return to the country and celebrations are expected to continue.

Lionel Messi was quoted as saying “I want to be in Argentina to see how crazy it is, I want them to wait for me, I can’t wait to go there and enjoy it with them.”
